Transportation

By Air

Monterey Peninsula Airport (MRY) is the closest airport to Asilomar and the Monterey Peninsula DART provides transportation to Asilomar (1-866-663-DART).

However, it may be more cost effective to fly into one of the three airports surrounding San Francisco Bay (see below) and either rent a car or take the MontereySalinas Airporter (1-831-373-7777, www.montereyairbus.com) or Early Bird Shuttle (1-831-462-3933, www.earlybirdairportshuttle.com). These shuttles serve only the San Francisco and San Jose airports (see below).

San Jose International Airport (SJC) is located approximately 65 miles north of Monterey. Allow 1.5 hours driving time from the Monterey Peninsula.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located approximately 105 miles north of Monterey. Allow 2.25 hours driving time from the Monterey Peninsula. Many connecting flights are available from SFO directly into Monterey.

Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located approximately 108 miles from Monterey. Allow 2.25 hours driving time.

Airport Transportation

Car rental from all three airports to Monterey - arrange at the airport or through your travel agent.

Local taxi companies service the Monterey Peninsula Airport, as does the Monterey-Salinas Transit bus system (see By Land info).

The Monterey/Salinas Airbus provides airport shuttle service between Monterey, San Jose and San Francisco for $30 each way. Call 888-883-2871 or visit www.montereyairbus.com for schedule and reservations.

By Land

The Greyhound Bus and the Amtrak Train (see below) both stop in Salinas. The local bus system will transport travelers to Asilomar, or taxis are available.

Public Transportation

The Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) bus system stops at the Monterey airport. The buses are clean and wheelchair accessible. The fare to Asilomar is $1.75 one way, and the total trip is about 30 minutes. Take any number Monterey-bound bus. Ask for a transfer when you board. Transfers are free. Tell the driver to announce the Monterey Transit Center, which is where you will disembark and transfer to the #1 Asilomar bus. There is rarely more than a 5-minute wait at the transfer point. The #1 bus will let you off at the front gate to the Asilomar Conference Grounds. MST buses also have room for two bicycles per bus.

Taxicab Service

Taxicabs are available at the Monterey Airport for transfer to Asilomar. Fares are $20 - $25 one-way.

It is highly recommended that you call to reserve your car well in advance, since some local events such as golf tournaments and music festivals have been known to create a rental car shortage. By Rail

AMTRAK services Salinas only. If there are four or more in your party, you can take the AMTRAK bus from Salinas to the Monterey Transit Center in downtown Monterey. For AMTRAK rates and schedules, and for information about the AMTRAK bus from Salinas to Monterey, contact AMTRAK at 455 Market Street #970, San Francisco, CA 94105, or call (800) 872-7245.

If you cannot take the AMTRAK bus, you can take the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) (see above). If you do not want to ride a bus from the AMTRAK station, you will need to rent a car to get to Asilomar from Salinas.

Directions to Asilomar

From Chicago on Route 66:

For those truly inspired by the conference theme, you could always take Historic Route 66 to get to NEMO U6, just note that the end of Route 66 is a mere 327 miles (approximately 6 hours and 24 minutes) south of Asilomar. And then there is the issue of it no longer existing as one continuous highway, so you may want to plan to start your trip a few weeks in advance.

From the North (San Francisco/San Jose):

  1. take Highway 101 to Highway 156 West.
  2. Take Highway 156 to Highway 1 South.
  3. From Highway 1 North or South exit at Pebble Beach/Pacific Grove/68 West.
  4. Take Highway 68 West 3.5 miles into Pacific Grove (where it turns into Forest Avenue).
  5. From Forest Avenue, turn left on Sinex Avenue (stoplight), which will take you directly to the front gate of Asilomar.

From the South on Highway 1:

  1. Take Highway 1 North exit at Pebble Beach/Pacific Grove/68 West.
  2. Take Highway 68 West 3.5 miles into Pacific Grove (where it turns into Forest Avenue).
  3. From Forest Avenue, turn left on Sinex Avenue (stoplight), which will take you directly to the front gate of Asilomar.

From the South on Highway 101:

  1. Take Highway 101 to Highway 68 West (toward Monterey Peninsula) Highway 1 South.

What began as a YWCA® retreat in 1913 is now a charming ocean-side Monterey beach resort for travelers seeking respite and renewal, and for groups looking for the perfect setting for a productive conference. Lodging at Asilomar is peaceful and rustic, with 313 rooms located in 30 buildings nestled along the shoreline forests and dunes.

About Your Stay

  • Rooms have private showers and bedding is provided. Asilomar rooms DO NOT have telephones or televisions.
  • Comfortable rooms vary in size, with one to four persons per room.
  • Roommates: If you would like to lower your costs, you are encouraged to share a room. If you don't specify with whom you would like to share a room on the registration form, you will be assigned roommates of the same gender. (One bed is assigned per person). Spouses will be automatically assigned together if they have the same last name or their registration arrives in the same envelope or fax, but all other roommates must be requested. If you wish to request a roommate who is not registering at the same time as you, you must be staying for exactly the same nights that they are, and make sure that they have also requested you as their roommate. Roommate requests will only be held for 2 weeks from receipt for the other roommate to register.
  • Rooms are available at 3pm on the day you arrive, but not before. NOTE: You may check in upon arrival and have your bags stored.
  • Asilomar lodging always includes the following meals with each night's stay: dinner on the night of stay, breakfast and lunch the next day.
  • They honor other types of room requests, especially for early registrants. These include specific buildings, older (and quainter) rooms, first or second floor, and a queen instead of two double beds (there are no king size beds). The later you register, the less flexibility we have with your rooming needs.

Guest Services

  • Business Services - Fax and photocopying services are available at the Front Desk for a nominal charge. The Business Center provides modem lines, computer access, and a printer.
  • Park Store - Open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily, featuring a wide selection of gift items and personal care products, as well as refreshments.
  • Bike rentals also available at the park store.
  • Porter - Asilomar's jitney (an on-grounds only shuttle service) is available to transport individuals anywhere on the grounds.
  • ATM – Located within the Asilomar's Phoebe A. Hearst Social Hall.
  • Telephones – Located throughout the grounds, and house telephones are in each building for on-grounds calls.

Parking

Parking is provided in designated areas. Disabled parking is available. Courtesy Parking Permits are available for individuals with special needs.

THERE IS NO PARKING on the Asilomar grounds for day use (conference only) participants; please park along nearby streets.

Activities at Asilomar

Located across the street from the Asilomar State Beach, the conference center includes acres of natural forest, sand dunes and coastline. Also enjoy:

Where to Eat

Onsite: Crocker Dining Hall

Your room registration includes three meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) in Asilomar's Crocker Dinning Hall. The Crocker Dining Hall is a spacious and welcoming gathering spot with high-beamed ceilings, stone pillars, hard wood floors and incomparable views of both forest and dunes.
