Amity Creek Restoration/Flood Impacts Tour

Organizers: Val Brady, Rich Axler, Kate Kubiak, Chris Kleist/Todd Carlson

Trip Details: Visit Amity Creek and tour several restoration sites to discuss stream and riparian projects, stormwater BMP study area, and view damage due to 500 year flood in June of 2012. Stops include: tree planting in upper watershed, Lakeside residential BMP study area, Graves Creek stabilization and monitoring site, eroding/slumping clay banks along river

University of Minnesota Duluth Stormwater Sustainability Tour

Organizer: Eric Larson, UMD Fac Mgt/Mindy Granley, UMD Sustainability Coord

Trip Details: Tour stormwater features around the University of Minnesota Duluth Campus, which includes over 50 innovative features designed to reduce runoff and downstream impacts, and learn about campus-wide sustainability efforts focused on students, staff, and facilities.

Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve & Great Ships Facility Boat Tour

Organizers: Cindy Hagley and Sue O’Halloran

Trip Details: Board the Vista Queen to tour the newest freshwater NERR’s facilities and the St. Louis River Estuary. Experience the Augmented-Reality Geoquest in the Estuary – players use mobile phones to “interact" with virtual characters located throughout the estuary, viewing videos, text, or pictures triggered by the phone's built in GPS system. Each of the games has a theme and a mission tied to the stories and science of the estuary.

Will also include a tour of the Great ships Initiative - where full-scale testing of ballast water treatment options are being performed to determine their effectiveness and applicability for retrofit of Great Lakes vessels to reduce or eliminate the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Kayaking in Harbor

Organizer: Dee Angradi

Trip Details: Spend the afternoon touring the upper St. Louis River estuary in a sea kayak; trip will be self-paced. Includes Wetsuit, Spray Skirt, Paddle, Life Jacket, Pump, Paddle Float. Kayaks provided by U of MN Duluth Rec Sports program.
