Geographic Focus

Covers the state but focuses on local watersheds within the Narragansett Bay and Pawcatuck Watersheds.

Topical Focus

Local non-point source pollution control focusing on sustainable land use and water resource management.

Target Audience

Volunteer board, commission, and council members, primarily Planning, Zoning and Town Council.

Primary Tools

Educational workshops using GIS customized to the community. Three tiers of outreach: 1) Community-based workshops, usually for three or four towns sharing a common watershed or aquifer; 2) GIS-based watershed risk assessment to identify and evaluate pollution risks using the MANAGE method; and 3) follow-up technical assistance in implementing management practices is tied to other URI Cooperative Extension Water Quality Programs such as URI On-site Wastewater Training Center, RI Home*A*Syst, and URI Watershed Watch. Annual basic training for board and commission members is planned.
