Mississippi NEMO Impacts

  • MS NEMO educational programs have assisted towns and counties throughout Mississippi to assess the cumulative impact of new development on storm drainage systems and to determine what on-site stormwater BMPs to require.
  • Working with the MS NEMO Program, which is coordinated by the state Department of Environmental Quality, Hancock County passed a stream buffer ordinance that prohibits any construction or clearing 25 feet from the top of the bank of any stream. Prior to the ordinance’s adoption, new developments cleared the land all the way to the stream.
  • The MS NEMO Program is run by the MDEQ Nonpoint Source Section (administers the 319 grant program) and has been included in the programs’ statewide mission.
