Ohio NEMO Holds Stormwater Workshop: The Ohio NEMO project held a one-day workshop on alternative approaches to stormwater management on June 13. Over 100 county engineers, staff and decision-makers attended to hear such infiltration illuminati as Bruce Ferguson (University of Georgia), Tim Lawrence (Ohio NEMO) and other statewide stormwater experts. For more information on the conference, zip over to OH-NEMO’s website: http://www2.ag.ohio-state.edu/~ohionemo That’s Doctor NEMO to You, Pal: This month the Maine Coordinator, formally known as Mr. Brad Guay, survived his thesis defense at the University of Arizona. When he wasn’t dodging tricky questions, avoiding the 100-plus degree heat, and slaking his thirst at near-by brew pubs, Dr. Guay found time to proselytize the NEMO message to the desert inhabitants of Tucson at a seminar held at the University. Congrats Brad!
S.S. NEMO Lands in Delaware: Hardly a shipwreck, the NEMO scoping session held in Lewes, DE and hosted by Delaware Sea Grant was a huge success. Representatives of state, county and local governments as well as professional and civic organizations attended the one-day workshop. Our thanks to the organizational efforts of Jim Falk and Joe Farrell of DE Sea Grant for a superlative workshop and for taking us to a terrific restaurant.
Another NEMO U-2 Reminder: It’s just around the corner. Block off October 22-24. Come marvel at the Coastal Services Center, revel in the company of your fellow NEMoids, and enjoy the hospitality of the SC NEMO Project. Coming soon!
Other News
NOAA/NEMO Collaboration Continues: New collaborative efforts have begun in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Georgia due, in part, to the NOAA Sea Grant’s Coastal Community Development program (see last month’s News Flash). If you’re using or collaborating with organizations utilizing the CCD Program, please contact the national office and tell us your story.Do you have news you would like to share with the Network? New NEMO Video Released: The long awaited and much heralded NEMO video is now ready for distribution. The video was created and produced by USDA/CSREES as part of their Partners news magazine. The video is about equal parts NEMO philosophy, and footage from Connecticut communities on the benefits and impacts of NEMO in their town. A staff contest was held to select a title for the new video. Some of the finalists included: "NEMO-Creating a sustainable future", "NEMO: More about us", and the staff favorite "Infiltrate this!". We finally settled on the prosaic, though functional, title: "The NEMO Project: Helping communities balance growth and natural resource protection". Watch your mailbox for your copy. Caution: due to the extreme emotive nature of the NEMO testimonials, hankies are suggested.
Wanted: Your Success Stories! Finally, a plea from our Connecticut Coordinator. Laurie Giannotti and our summer intern Brianne are putting together a website focusing on infiltrative design. As part of the site, they are looking for success stories from around the country, especially pictures and maintenance info. If you know of a development, subdivision or land use regulation in your state that favors infiltrative stormwater practices, particularly if they came about as a consequence of your program (but even if they didn’t), please contact John.
